Established in July 2002 by a Sri Lankan-Danish association, the Copenhagen Buddhist Vihara was created to give local Theravada Buddhists a permanent place to worship. The temple's founding was inspired by Scandinavia's chief monk, Venerable Bhante Dhammaratana, after local followers expressed the need for a resident monk. It began operating in a rented space on Augustagade under its first resident monk, Bhante Kirindigalle Gnanaratana Thero, who served until 2011. After hosting a major international Kathina ceremony in late 2002, the growing temple eventually relocated to Vallensbæk Strand.
